What should I do if my child is sick in the morning before school starts?

For any student absence, parents are required to fill in the student absence form.

This form will be received by the secretariat and will also be forwarded to the class teacher. Please indicate the class of your child and the duration of the absence. This procedure must be followed daily as long as your child is ill, unless the medical certificate confirms an extended absence.

If no valid excuse is received within three days, the absence is considered to be unjustified. Too many unjustified absences may lead to a procedure in the interests of our students.

On returning to class after three days, the student must provide the class teacher with a medical certificate to excuse the absence. If a medical certificate is not presented, an unjustified absence will be counted.

An unjustified absence from classes exceeding twenty half-days within a single school year will lead to disciplinary measures.

The school is obliged to inform the parents after 30 unexcused hours of absence (lettre d’avertissement). After 40 unexcused absences, the school must inform the relevant authorities.

What do I do when my child is sick during the school day ?

If your child feels unwell during the day, he or she can go to the student secretary’s office. Under no circumstances do students go home alone. The school management requests that you pick up your child from the secretary’s office as soon as possible and complete the absence form before leaving school.

On returning to class, the student must submit a duly completed absence excuse form to the school management in writing to excuse the absence by using this form.

After three days of absence, a medical certificate is required. If no medical certificate is presented, the absence is considered unexcused.

Is it possible to change the language section?

In line with the linguistic policy of the European Schools, changes in linguistic choices are generally not anticipated. However, if a change is requested, regardless of the student’s age or level, the decision is made by the Director and is subject to the following conditions:

  • A well-founded written request from parents or guardians.
  • Review and decision on the request by the Class Council at the end of the school year.
  • Clear evidence from the EIGT demonstrating the student’s ability to follow the requested course.
  • A written reference from the student’s language teacher(s).

Here you can find the request for a language change.

What is the procedure if my child wants to leave the EIGT?

Any change of school must be notified to your child’s class teacher as soon as possible. He or she will initiate the necessary steps.

The school management requires proof of enrollment at another school to process your child’s disenrollment from EIGT if they are subject to compulsory schooling.

What types of assessments will my child encounter?

At the secondary level, students will be assessed through a combination of short and long tests. The school provides a timetable for the long tests in September, which is displayed in each classroom. This schedule is designed to distribute the workload more evenly across the week for each student. However, short tests may still occur on the same day as a long test in a different subject.

If a student misses a long test, they are required to make it up at the designated test centre on Tuesdays between 1:10 PM and 2:45 PM (during units 7 and/or 8). Any absence from a long test must be justified with a medical certificate.

In S1-S3, as outlined in Article 59 of the General Rules of the European Schools, students are graded using letter grades from A (excellent) to FX (very poor).  In years S4-S6, teachers assess students’ performance using numerical marks, ranging from 0 to 10, including half marks.

When will my child receive a school report?

The school year is divided into two semesters. At the end of each semester, class councils convene, and the school reports are distributed to parents, students, and guardians. In the middle of each semester, intermediate reports are exclusively made available through the Extranet student portal so that students and parents can have an overview of the performance so far.

A calendar with the exact dates for report issuance will be available here shortly.

What does the school insurance cover for students?

The school insurance covers personal accidents during the school day and on school trips. It also covers damages caused by students to others during school time.

What happens if a student is involved in an accident?

In the event of an accident, the school will inform the parents as soon as possible. If necessary, the school may call emergency services to take the child for medical care.

What does the school insurance not cover?
  • Loss or theft of personal belongings and clothing: The school recommends that students avoid bringing money or valuables that are not needed for class, as these items are not covered by the insurance. If an item is stolen, the parents must contact the police.
  • Damages incurred if a student leaves the school without permission: Any damage that occurs under these circumstances is not covered by the school insurance.

Who is responsible for material damage caused by students?

  • Any material damage caused by students will be charged to the parents.

Where and how do I get the school books?

The government provides all school books free of charge through the myschoolbooks programme. The books are chosen by teachers on the basis of the curriculum and teaching objectives. Books that are no longer used by students are reused for the next generation. This is why we encourage students to take good care of their materials. A list of school supplies is sent to parents before the start of the school year.

You can order the books for your child by using this link

Does the EIGT-Merl have a lost and found desk?
